Although there are many details of injury, murder scenes and bodies throughout the book, these are necessary for the subject. They make compelling and unforgettable reading. Several high-profile cases are featured in the book, some of which are internationally notorious. In a case where a crime has allegedly been committed, discovering the truth is even more important. He shows that there’s a beauty to the human body, even a deceased one, and that uncovering its layers to determine the cause of death is actually an art. This was an area I previously knew little of, so I’m pleased that Dr Shepherd was my guide to a subject that many people find uncomfortable or even abhorrent. Luckily, I pushed through my initial fear of the contents and I can now strongly recommend this as a fascinating, engaging read.ĭr Richard Shepherd writes clearly and confidently about his career in forensic pathology. It’s mainly about post mortems and there’s a scalpel on the front cover. I was worried that this book would be too far out of my comfort zone.

The mask of the sensitive, youthful protagonist is too thin to prevent Annemarie’s face from shining through.” The translation is by Lucy Renner Jones. Gelesen von Bibiana Beglau.) Collection Rolf Heyne, Mnchen 2008, ISBN 978-3-89910-368-7. It concerns a young man’s obsessive love for a nightclub singer, but as Schwarzenbach biographers Nicole Müller and Dominique Grente point out, the real model for the hero is obvious. Lyric Novella, as we saw recently, was written during Schwarzenbach’s Berlin period in the early 1930s (though it was actually penned in Rheinsberg, north of the city). They’re published by Seagull Books whose intriguing list offers, among other things, translations from French (Antonin Artaud, Guillaume Apollinaire, Guy Debord) and German (Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Max Frisch). So it comes as a very welcome development that not one but two of her books have recently been translated. There is no biography of her available in English, and very few of her writings. Swiss writer and adventurer Annemarie Schwarzenbach is a perfect example. 5/22/2023 0 Comments The Hat by Holly KellerLook for ready guffaws from young audiences, whether read or sung, though those attuned to disability stereotypes may find themselves wincing instead or as well. Even though the book has no included soundtrack, the sly, high-spirited, eye patch–sporting donkey that grins, winks, farts, and clumps its way through the song on a prosthetic metal hoof in Cowley’s informal watercolors supplies comical visual flourishes for the silly wordplay. It is three-legged, and so a “wonky donkey” that, on further examination, has but one eye and so is a “winky wonky donkey” with a taste for country music and therefore a “honky-tonky winky wonky donkey,” and so on to a final characterization as a “spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky honky-tonky winky wonky donkey.” A free musical recording (of this version, anyway-the author’s website hints at an adults-only version of the song) is available from the publisher and elsewhere online. She is the mother of two grown children and lives. In the song, Smith meets a donkey on the road. The print version of a knee-slapping cumulative ditty. For all practical purposes making art can be examined in great detail without ever getting entangled in the very remote problems of genius."-from the IntroductionĪrt & Fear explores the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. Geniuses get made once-a-century or so, yet good art gets made all the time, so to equate the making of art with the workings of genius removes this intimately human activity to a strangely unreachable and unknowable place. After all, art is rarely made by Mozart-like people essentially-statistically speaking-there aren't any people like that. Ordinary art means something like: all art not made by Mozart. The authors explore the way art gets made, the reasons it doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. An artist's survival guide, written by and for working artists. He pronounces Objective Journalism a myth, and proceeds to say exactly what he thinks of EVERYONE. Thompson admits to being a misanthrope, but claims that what made him that way was politics - Everything that is wrong-headed, cynical & vicious in me today traces straight back to that evil hour in September of '69 when I decided to get heavily involved in the political process. And we won't even go into the part where Thompson's cigarette almost blows up Nixon's plane. And how many respected journalists can make this claim? - Random House still owes me a lot of money from that time when the night watchman beat my snake to death. I was bored from bad noise on the radio and half-drunk from doing off a quart of Wild Turkey between the Chicago and Altoona exit., or I finished my double-tequila and went upstairs to my room to get hopelessly stoned by myself and pass out. Oh, the madman pops up now and then with lines like. The drug-addled ramblings of a drunken madman, perhaps? Imagine my surprise to find his writing to be sharp, clear, keenly observant, and funny as hell. Jesus! Where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to be President?Īs Thompson's reputation precedes him, I had no clue what to expect from this book. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Frost burned by patricia briggsThe third book, Iron Kissed, was a number one New York Times bestseller and subsequent novels have continued to perform similarly in sales. He’s totally heartless according to Parisian society, and that’s exactly how he likes it. Ten years later, Luke is a trendsetter, a man of fashion and influence, deadly with both blade and pistol and much sought after by the ladies, but with a reputation for being cold and unemotional. Its hero, Lucas Kendrick, left England a decade earlier following a heart-breaking betrayal and its terrible aftermath, and has since made a life for himself in Paris. Heartless was originally published in 1995 and is set in the late Georgian era. I have noticed a number of them (including this one, and its sequel, Silent Melody) coming back into print and being made available digitally, so I’m hoping that the audiobooks will follow – and will add my voice to those longing for re-issues of Ms Balogh’s Simply series (also narrated by Rosalyn Landor) and for recordings of her Bedwyn books. It’s been a treat, over the last few months, to see some of Mary Balogh’s older titles finally making it into audio format. |
